Woodcut initials. 6 (of 14) magnificent full-page portraits of Roman emperors, Augustus, Caesar, Claudius, Vespasianus, Titus, and of the philosopher/statesman Seneca, engraved by A. A tear and a small hole in the last leaf repaired with strips of paper) (Note: The Dutch Renaissancist poet, playwright and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, 1581-1647, may be considered one of the founding fathers of the literature of Holland's Golden Age. His style is not easily accessible, and often shows a sentence structure derived from Latin. Around 1630 he started with his translation into Dutch of works of the Roman historian Tacitus, 56-117 A.D. These translations of the 'Annales', 'Historiae', 'Germania' and the 'Agricola' were posthumely published in 1684 by his able biographer Geeraert Brandt, 1626-1685. Hooft, in who the genius of Tacitus had arisen, according to Brandt, was not satisfied with the previously published translations, and decided to make a translation of his own which suited the style of the Roman historian better. Hooft however never found time to publish his translation. In the preface Brandt tells that the manuscript with the translations came into his hands by chance, long after the death of Hooft. He then decided to rescue them from oblivion, and to publish them. In the same year the firm of Boom brought also a more expensive and posh folio-edition on the market. The folio-edition was, according to Geerebaert, printed first) (Provenance: Round stamp of 'Coll. St. Dominici Neomagi'. The 'Collegium Sancti Dominici' (Dominicus College) was founded in 1856 in Nijmegen. For a long time it was a Minor seminary, first established in the Dominican convent on the Broerstraat in Nijmegen and from 1877 on the Lange Nieuwstraat. Initially the 'Dominicus College' was a boarding school, and had until the 1970s interns. Girls were first admitted in 1967. Until the 1980s, some of the teachers had been or still were Dominican. At the end of the 20th century, the white habits slowly faded away. (Source Wikipedia 'Dominicus College') § One Dominican father put his stamp 'Pr. Th. H. Derksen, S.O. Praed.' on the half title. A dominican Derksen once played a role in the Dutch pacifist movement 'Pax Christi'. Whether he is the man of our stamp, we do not know) (Collation: (a)-(g)4; A - 4Z4, 5A2 (leaf 5A2 blank), A-M4) (Photographs on request) (Heavy book, may require extra shipping costs)
