In it an ancient temple painting, which caught the attention of two visitors, is explained by an old man. It is an allegorical picture on which the dangers and temptations of human life are symbolically represented. It shows that happiness can only be reached by a proper education and a virtuous life. This once popular ethical work is now almost forgotten. But in the 16th, 17th and 18th century it was widely read, especially by clerics and schoolboys. This edition of Büchling is meant for beginners, is told in the introduction. Experience in Privatuntericht and in the classroom has learned Büchling the usefulness of this text. § The German schoolmaster Johann David Büchling, 1762-1811, was born in Halle. He produced school editions of a great number of Roman and Greek school authors, e.g. Sallustius, Aesopus, Palaephatus, Cicero, Anacreon, Theophrastus, and Nepos) (Provenance: On the front pastedown 'Bibl.
